CLIFTON BOY’S SCHOOL CAMPUS REDEVLOPMENT: A FUSION OF TRADITION AND INNOVATION INSPIRES ITALTILE COMMERCIAL.
Since the early 1920s, a unique fusion of tradition and innovation has been woven into the cultural fabric of Clifton, one of Durban’s premier independent boys’ schools. It’s clearly evident not only in the ethos of inspirational learnership programmes, but also in the buildings and immaculate grounds of the elegant and sophisticated campus, re-envisioned as “a school in a garden in a city” in the substantial long-term build development which was tabled in 2014.
Boogertman and Partners Architects have been closely involved with the redevelopment master plan since 2018, as have Italtile Commercial KZN, tasked with the selection and supply of high-end products (including porcelain tiles, taps and sanware) in keeping with the campus aesthetic.
Boogertman’s Geoffrey Richards frames the look and feel as “a modern interpretation of existing architecture found on the campus, which historically consisted of individual residential properties that the school acquired over time and consolidated into one stand”. Some of the older buildings – beautiful examples of colonial ‘Natal Verandah’ and ‘Arts and Crafts’ have been retained and lovingly refurbished to retain their historical relevance.
The final space – a boarding establishment – was completed in April 2024 after a 12-month building process and is a beautiful example of the fusion of tradition with innovation. Italtile Commercial was briefed to select appropriate finishes for all the bathrooms. In keeping with the elevated and future-forward nature of the space, Italtile KZN’s Commercial Agent Nadia Moodley chose sustainably crafted sanware by world-leading Swiss specialists Laufen, along with waterwise Italian-made Tivoli taps from suppliers ITD. All products used in the project are exclusive to Italtile Commercial and carry Italtile’s LiveGreen label.
